EDET UWEH
“My mother is a great teacher.” – EDET UWEH
Edet Uweh (born 2000), Rembrandt’s bright style and expert use of light inspired Edet Uweh’s work, which shows his love of Renaissance and Medieval masterworks. His use of strong value contrasts, harmonized hues, and powerful compositions reflects his ancestors’ style.
The artist’s vision is expressed in oil, his favored media. Its pliability and slow drying time allow Edet to directly connect with his materials, enabling an adventurous creative process. Due to need and invention, his precise drawings are now in pen and ink. Edet Uweh’s story shows inventive tenacity despite all difficulties. His rise from early doodles to complex allegorical tales shows his dedication to global communication via art. As Uweh’s creative journey continues, his contributions deepen modern realism, establishing him as a rising star.
Edet’s, ‘Her Story’, makes a striking entrance into the art world through his debut solo exhibition—a deeply felt and visually stunning series of oil paintings that center the beauty, strength, and resilience of women. This powerful body of work elevates the lived experiences of women, particularly Black women, through intimate portrayals that honor their stories as history.
At just the beginning of his career, Uweh demonstrates remarkable command of the medium. His oil paintings are rich with emotion, layered meaning, and fine detail—each one a tender meditation on love, rest, and relationship. Women are shown not only as muses but as matriarchs, dreamers, and revolutionaries in quiet moments of reflection.
In Nurturing Love (II), a mother and child are locked in restful embrace—an image of caregiving that radiates peace. Yellow Dreams captures a woman lying in repose, swathed in golden tones and surrounded by lush florals, embodying both softness and strength. In Her Eyes features a woman reclined against a patterned backdrop, her expression confident and contemplative. Across all three works, Uweh’s attention to fabric color, and skin imbues each subject with presence and dignity.
Her Story is more than a show—it’s a statement. It speaks to the quiet power of sisterhood, the sacredness of everyday rituals, and the endurance of women’s love and labor. For a young artist’s first solo outing, it is both ambitious and refreshingly tender.
